Chemical-biological laboratory

Analyses for feed evaluation are carried out in the feed laboratory of the Animal Nutrition working group. These include chemical and biological methods such as routine nutrient analyses (crude protein, cell wall compounds, sugar) and the Hohenheim Feed Value Test (HFT).

Another focus is the (further) development and establishment of in vitro systems for the evaluation of feed for farm animals. These research approaches enable a more precise prediction of the energy and nutrient supply capacity of feedstuffs, even using laboratory methods. This makes it possible to influence product properties and quality in a targeted manner without the need for costly animal experiments, as well as to provide nutrition that is better adapted to the animals' needs and conserves resources, and to reduce undesirable nutrient inputs into ecosystems while maintaining the same yield.

Feed science exercises and practicals are carried out in the feed laboratory as part of the teaching program.
